- Founding of the City:
- Originally, this was a Persian-Egyptian shore city called Rhakotis.
- Alexander the Great seized control of this small town from the Persians. This original group of people maintained a corner of Alexandria, making up one of three districts within Alexandria.

- Alexander the Great renamed the city Alexandria in 331 BCE, wanting it to be a Hellenistic center in Egypt. He only stayed there planning the city for a few months before leaving to conquer Persia. He never returned alive, but his body was eventually buried in Alexandria.
- He valued it for its large potential port to the Mediterranean.
- It became the capital city of Egypt.
