  1. Founding of the City:
    • Originally, this was a Persian-Egyptian shore city called Rhakotis.
    • Alexander the Great seized control of this small town from the Persians. This original group of people maintained a corner of Alexandria, making up one of three districts within Alexandria.
      •   Brucheum-Greek Quarter    
      •  Jewish Quarter —    
      •  Rhakotis
    • Alexander the Great renamed the city Alexandria in 331 BCE, wanting it to be a Hellenistic center in Egypt. He only stayed there planning the city for a few months before leaving to conquer Persia. He never returned alive, but his body was eventually buried in Alexandria.
    • He valued it for its large potential port to the Mediterranean.
    • It became the capital city of Egypt.

    • Largest Mediterranean City in Egypt for centuries
    • Rapid development due to location
    • Massive amounts of trade – grain to Mediterranean, papyrus everywhere, goods from South Asia and East Asia.
    • Ended up connecting Europe with the Arabic and African worlds
